Academic Therapy
Comprehension
When reading comprehension problems are not due to
an inability to read the words (decoding), the problem is often related
to the ability to create an accurate and complete image from what is
read. Compounding this visual imagery dysfunction,
are often problems with visual and auditory memory, vocabulary and sequencing skills.
Rather than practice comprehension, as is done in schools by rereading the same paragraph
over and over, we train the student to make more accurate imagery and provide them with a
structure to organize that information and retrieve it. Academic therapy with the
ReadingFish program can start when a student has reached the third grade level.
ReadingFish is the first program to integrate and sequentially apply
three types of instructional practice identified by independent research as effective at
improving reading comprehension. ReadingFish includes:
A highly structured 'visual imagery' program
'Cognitive skills training' designed to improve working memory,
attention and visualization skills
Instruction and practice developing 'meta-cognitive comprehension
strategies'
